Police officers from Kamagambo Police Station have successfully apprehended a suspected drug trafficker and seized a massive consignment of bhang valued at over Ksh1 million.

The arrest was made possible after a tip-off from vigilant members of the public.

The suspect, identified as Calvin Okoth Otieno, was intercepted while driving a public service vehicle, registration number KDM 981Z, en route from Migori to Kisumu.

Officers, acting on intelligence from concerned citizens, set up an ambush along the route and stopped the vehicle for a search.

During the operation, officers discovered two large bags concealed within the vehicle. A thorough inspection revealed 401 sizable rolls of bhang weighing 34.4 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh1,032,000.

The haul is considered one of the most significant drug seizures in the region in recent months.

In a bid to avoid detection, Otieno had reportedly filled his vehicle with students, seemingly believing the presence of young passengers would deflect suspicion. However, the ruse was quickly unraveled by the observant public and alert law enforcement officers.

Okoth is currently in custody at Kamagambo Police Station, where he is undergoing processing ahead of his court appearance.

Authorities have lauded the public for their vigilance and willingness to report suspicious activities, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in the fight against narcotics trafficking.

The arrest serves as a stern warning to drug traffickers who exploit public transportation for illegal activities. Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations to dismantle drug networks and ensure the safety of residents.

As investigations continue, authorities are determined to identify and apprehend any accomplices linked to the illicit trade, with a renewed focus on curbing the drug menace in the region.
