Ministry of Health confirms cholera outbreak in Migori, Kisumu and Nairobi on 8th April 2025. In a press statement, a total of 97 cholera cases have been reported in the 3 counties with Migori leading with a total of 53 cases, 32 cases in Kisumu and 12 cases in Nairobi.

Cholera is a highly infectious waterborne disease which is contacted through contaminated food and water. Symptoms of the deadly disease include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, muscle cramps and severe dehydration. According to the research conducted a total of 6 deaths have been reported in the 3 counties .
The Ministry of Health in collaboration with County governments has enhanced health worker training to sensitize them on surveillance, case management and hygiene to foster better managing of cholera cases. It has also facilitated community engagements by disseminating information using community health providers, administrators and the media. The ministry is also managing cholera cases by testing suspected cases and providing treatment for the cases confirmed.
Household water treatment and sanitation measures have been enforced following field investigations revealing the consumption of untreated water.
Personal hygiene is vital in curbing cholera and therefore citizens are advised to wash hands frequently with soap and water especially after using the toilet and before eating and preparing food. The public should only drink clean water (treated or chlorinated) and dispose waste properly to avoid water contamination.
Cholera can cause rapid dehydration and death therefore seeking early medical attention will salvage the problem. The ministry has reassured the public that it is adequately prepared to manage and contain the outbreak.
