President William Ruto has promised to attend the final of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, should Kenya’s Rising Stars reach the tournament’s climax. The President made this promise during a flag-off ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday April 15, 2025 in the morning, as the team prepares for their final training camp in Morocco.
Addressing the players, President Ruto acknowledged the formidable challenge ahead but expressed unwavering confidence in their potential. “I know you’re heading to Egypt, and I understand the assignment is tough. But if you qualify for the final, I’ll be there. Make me come to the finals of AFCON. Just get there — I’ll be in the stands cheering you on,” he stated.
Kenya’s Rising Stars are set to compete in Group B alongside football powerhouses Nigeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. The tournament, which kicks off on April 27 and concludes on May 18, will see 12 teams vying for continental glory and four spots at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
President Ruto assured the team of full government support throughout their campaign and encouraged them to represent Kenya with pride. “You have the full support of the government of Kenya — and my support as well. Go make us proud,” he added.
The President also highlighted his administration’s commitment to nurturing sports talent through improved infrastructure. He cited projects like the Talanta Sports City, a state-of-the-art facility under construction in Nairobi, as part of efforts to elevate Kenyan sports globally.
The Rising Stars made history by qualifying for their first-ever U20 AFCON after a commanding 4-0 victory over Burundi in the CECAFA qualifiers last October. The team departs for Morocco on Wednesday, April 16, to finalize preparations before heading to Egypt.
Kenya’s squad features a mix of promising talent across all positions, including forwards Hassan Beja and Ezekiel Omuri, midfielders Aldrine Kibet and Kevin Wangaya, and defenders Baron Ochieng and Humphrey Obina.
With high stakes and national pride on the line, all eyes will be on Kenya’s Rising Stars as they embark on this historic journey.
