National Assembly Minority Leader and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has publicly made known his thinking on appropriate representative in the Gender docket.

Speaking today 16th April, 2025, Junet claimed a male Cabinet Secretary(CS) would serve better compared to their female counterparts who have been holding the docket since its inception.

According to him, females seemingly don’t take the docket with utmost seriousness it deserves noting that the CSs who have so far had an opportunity to serve have not effectively dealt with the Gender disparity debate.

“Women are given the opportunity to deal with their matters but they don’t take it serious. A man can serve the interest of women better than the women themselves. I think the right person to be Minister of Gender is a man,” the legislator claims.

Further, Junet argues that gender cuts across both sexes and thus the docket should not be left for women only.

“If you asked me, the Minister for Gender should be made a man because Gender cuts across. We had vetted another nominee (Stella Lang’at) earlier who the House rejected. This is the second nominee we are vetting. I think a man can serve the interest of women better than women themselves. I think the right person to be Gender CS is a man.”He reteirated.

Currently, Hannah Wendot Cheptumo, widow of late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has been approved by the National Assembly to hold the docket.

“I hope Madam Wendot will take the issue of women very serious,” Junet prays

In August, 2024, Parliament rejected Stella Lang’ata for failing to demonstrate adequate knowledge of topical, administrative and technical issues touching on the Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts and Heritage to which she had been nominated to lead.

Previous CS Aisha Jumwa on the other hand lost his position after being sacked following prolonged Gen Zs anti-government and anti-finance bill demonstrations.
