Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has weighed in on Titus Wekesa Sifuna’s case terming it as reckless and a mistake that will forever teach him a lesson.
In a case that led to arraignment of Titus Sifuna at the Milimani Law Courts, Sifuna opened an X (formerly Twitter) account with @5thethief handle and “I must go” as username publishing derogatory posts against President William Ruto and his family.
Further, Sifuna used the President’s image as the account’s profile picture.
According to the prosecution, the posts amounted to hate speech while attracting negative public reactions thus dangerous to national peace and cohesion.
“The content of the X account poses a serious threat to the country’s reputation, as the President is a symbol of national unity and should be respected and honored by all,” the prosecution partly told the court.
Addressing the viral matter today, Esther Passaris calls for caution while exercising the fundamental Freedom of Speech.
She urges the youth to be responsible for their actions, always noting that everyone is accountable for whatever they do.
“Freedom of speech is a right. But freedom without wisdom becomes recklessness. The DCI charged Sifuna with publishing false information, an offense under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.”She started.
She highlights that Sifuna’s act might land him up to ten years imprisonment or Ksh 5 million penalty.
“His mistakes must teach him something. He will own them. He will grow from them,” she notes.
While concluding her piece of mind, Passaris warned the youth against being reckless, pointing out that being young is not an excuse to post anything without thinking of the consequences.
“And herein lies a lesson for the rest of us: That accountability is not the end—it’s the beginning of wisdom. That being young is not a license for recklessness, but a call to responsibility.” She summarized.
Sifuna’s case comes only barely six months after another young Kenyan was charged for putting the image of President Ruto in a coffin while depicting a State funeral procession.
David Oaga Mokaya, a Moi University student, was charged for allegedly posting the image on his X account dubbed Landlord with the handle @bozgabi, on November 13, 2024, claiming it was of President William Ruto being transported.
He was released on a Ksh 100,000 bond or a cash bail of Ksh 50,000 after denying the charge.
