Residents of Navakholo in Kakamega County are mourning following an incident of a pit latrine under construction that caved in, killing two young men.

While narrating the unfortunate incident, Rachae Nancy an area resident states that the occurrence happened suddenly drawing the attention of those around the scene.

She notes that when they rushed to the scene, the duo had been buried alive in the County pai latrine they were digging.

“Tukaskia nduru, kutoka nje tukapata watu wanakimbia. Kumbe ndugu zangu eti wameingia ndani ya choo wanachimba na imewafunika. Ni uchungu sana,”Nancy narrated.

Another resident raised concerns to the County Government of Kakamega over what he attributes as negligence and not putting appropriate measures to prevent such incidences.

“Tunauliza kaunti ya Kakamega, ni nini wanatufanyia hii?..Kwa nini hawawezi kuja kupima mahali pa kuchimba choo, watume Engineer wadhibitishe udongo iko sawa…” Emmanuel Litali posed.

Further, according to Litali, the County Government sent a water-filled fire truck to the scene instead of proper excavation tools.

“Mtu atakwamaje na mnaleta gari ya moto ya kupuliza maji?”Litali further questioned.

The saddened residents are now calling upon their County Government led by Governor Fernandes Barasa to be serious in dealing with such matters to prevent more losses of lives.

They have urged the authorities to employ individuals in response teams and ensure relevant equipment are sent during such tragedies.

“Gari yenye imekuwa hapa ni ya kuzima moto. Sisi kama jamii tumehuzunika na tunasema tunataka viongozi watashughulikia wananchi,” Isaiah Mukunga another resident angrily stated.

The two bodies are yet to be retrieved.
