The Kisumu County Government has announced the closure of Kibuye Market in Kisumu City following concerns over a cholera outbreak.

Speaking from his office in Kisumu, City Manager Abala Wanga urged traders operating in the market to relocate to Uhuru Market immediately. This, he explained, is part of measures to curb the spread of the highly contagious cholera disease.

“We would like to inform the public and traders at Kibuye Market that we are closing the market and all traders are to move to Uhuru Market,” stated Wanga.

He further emphasized the importance of cleanliness in preventing the spread of cholera, adding, “We need to sanitize the area to stop cholera and other diseases.”

The relocation is set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, with traders expected to vacate the premises to allow the county government to fumigate and clean the market.

This effort is seen as a precautionary step to control the spread of cholera and mitigate other potential health risks.

Wanga reassured traders about the availability of ample space at Uhuru Market.

It’s worth noting that Kibuye Market has been a hotbed of frequent disputes between the Kisumu County Government and market leadership.

The current directive, issued without prior notice, raises questions about compliance among traders. As the clock ticks towards tomorrow, the focus shifts to whether the traders will heed the directive or resist the sudden move.

This development underscores the ongoing public health challenges in Kisumu County, as authorities grapple with balancing swift measures against potential disruption to the livelihoods of market traders.

The outcome of this directive will undoubtedly serve as a pivotal moment in Kisumu’s efforts to combat cholera outbreaks and maintain community health.
