At least five people have been killed in violent clashes in Angata Barrikoi, Narok, following a confrontation with government officials who were conducting land demarcations. The incident began when residents, who claim historical ownership of the land, blocked the main road to prevent the land officials from surveying the area.
The situation escalated quickly, leading to violent clashes between the residents and the police, with injuries reported on both sides. Five individuals are believed to have been shot and killed during the unrest. Additionally, a vehicle belonging to the land officials was attacked and damaged by residents, further intensifying tensions.
The destruction of the vehicle, which is viewed as a symbol of government intervention, added to the frustration of the local community. Narok Deputy Governor Tomalinye Koech condemned the killings, questioning the police’s actions and urging an end to the forceful appropriation of land.
Local elders have intervened, calling for peace and urging both the community and authorities to engage in dialogue to resolve the dispute without further violence.
Authorities are working to support the families of the deceased and injured, while calling for calm from all parties involved.
