Tension remains high in Homa Bay after the shocking killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong’ondo Were on Wednesday night, an act his relatives describe as a politically motivated killing.

Were’s sister-in-law has come forward with damning revelations, stating that the MP had been receiving threats prior to his death and had already reported them to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI. Despite the warnings, she claims, no action was taken to protect him.

Speaking at Lee Funeral Home on Wednesday, she emphasized: “It is not in darkness that Ong’ondo Were had his life threatened. The matter was already reported to the DCI. The perpetrator of this murder is known.”

This statement raises serious concerns about police inaction. “There is a wave of violence creeping into Homa Bay politics that must be tamed by law enforcement authorities,” she added.

Two months before his death, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul had expressed concerns for his safety.

On the night of his death, DCI boss Mohamed Amin, Nairobi police chief George Seda, and Interior PS Raymond Omollo visited Nairobi Hospital after Were was rushed there, where he was pronounced dead.

The MP was shot at close range near the City Mortuary roundabout. Authorities confirmed he had been trailed by gunmen on a motorcycle shortly after leaving Parliament around 7 PM. The shooting occurred at around 7:30 PM on Ngong Road.

Speaking to the media, Interior PS Raymond Omollo confirmed that the assailants followed Were’s car from Parliament. “We are yet to establish the exact identity of the assailant,” he said. “The driver and bodyguard brought him to the hospital, but it appears the attacker was trailing the car from town.”

“ODM Leader Raila Odinga has mourned the loss of Were: ‘A gallant son of the soil gone too soon'”

Leaders, including Minority Leader in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed, have called for an expedited investigation. Mohammed, speaking at Lee Funeral Home, urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and swiftly share their findings with the public.

“We want to assure the public that we will expedite the investigation process to uncover the truth,” PS Omollo reassured the grieving family.
