Four Kenyan filmmakers detained Friday night 2nd, May in a dramatic way have been released on free bond.
Nicholas Wambugu Gichuki, Brian Adagala, Mark Karubiu, and Christopher Wamae have been released on free bond on Saturday morning.
Their lawyer, Ian Mutiso, confirmed the release but noted that their electronic devices remain in the hands of authorities.
The four filmmakers, were arrested on Friday night from their studio in Karen under unclear circumstances. Their filming equipment and data storage devices were also seized during the raid. They were held separately at Pangani and Muthaiga Police Stations.
This comes as the Head of Presidential Special Projects & Creative Economy Dennid Itumbi critisized the arrest. Through his social media accounts Itumbi said ”arresting BBC journalists merely for making a film, is unnecessary.”
Itumbi contonued ” There is an alternative story on the violence and political planning that unleashed storming of bunge and invading the armoury at the mausoleum. Make an alternative documentary, tell the other story. BBC told their story. Let them be.”
However a few moments later Itumbi said the arrested filmmakers have no links to the BBC. Itumbi said ”The four filmmakers are now free. Let it be clear: The four filmmakers arrested last night have no connection to BBC. They are not BBC staff or affiliates.” he stated.
