Suspect in MP Charles Ong’ondo Were’s murder, Nahashon Aroko, has been freed on Sh300,000 bail. In a ruling Friday morning, the JKIA Court Magistrate Irene Gichobi ordered him to surrender his passport, provide contact persons, and avoid any communication with witnesses or respondents in the case.

He has also been barred from travelling to Homa Bay County, contacting witnesses or respondents in the case, and furnishing investigators with information or evidence.

The case will be mentioned on June 3.

Aroko surrendered to police at the Gigiri Police Station on 7th May, moments after he was named by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as a person of interest in the murder of the late MP.

Aroko, a known political figure from Homa Bay County, had reportedly expressed interest in contesting the Kasipul parliamentary seat in the 2027 general election.

Twelve suspects are already in custody over the murder of the MP; among them is the boda boda rider, who is alleged to have ferried the assassin who shot and killed the MP. According to the police, the suspect admitted having been paid Ksh50,000 for his role.

Other suspects who are in custody are the driver and the bodyguard. The two were not hurt when a gunman opened fire at a traffic jam in Nairobi, killing Were on the spot.

The bodyguard jumped out of the car as the gunman had hopped onto a getaway motorcycle.

The late MP was brutally murdered on April 30, on Valley Road near City Mortuary.
