Ethiopian authorities have arrested four suspects linked to the killing of four Kenyan fishermen in Todonyang, Turkana North earlier this week.

The arrests, made on Friday, May 16, came just hours after Ethiopian police identified the suspects and detained their fathers in a tactical move that led to the suspects surrendering.

The suspects, all from the Dassanech community, have been identified as Nyechu Achobe, Nabotee Ara, Kelete Atete, and Armiyat Lochoronyang. Their fathers are currently in custody in Dassanech, with Ethiopian police citing communal accountability as the rationale behind their detention.

“The Dassanech administration remains committed to ensuring justice and maintaining peace in the region,” the Ethiopian police said.

Turkana County Professional Association Chairperson Jackson Nakusa has condemned the killings, calling on the government to build a military camp on the border to combat the poachers.

This incident comes just three months after a similar attack in the same region, where 20 Kenyan fishermen were killed by suspected Ethiopian militia.
