A 38-year-old man has been arrested in Sotik, Bomet County, for allegedly slaughtering a dog and selling its meat to unsuspecting members of the public. The suspect, Richard Kigen, is in police custody as investigations continue.

The case came to light after the Assistant Chief of Sotik Township, Madam Emma, reported the incident to the Sotik Police Station following a tip-off from concerned residents in the Chemagel and Kimase areas.

“I received information from local residents about suspicious meat being sold within the municipality,” said Assistant Chief Emma. “Upon further inquiries, I learned that the suspect was slaughtering dogs and distributing the meat secretly.”

Police officers acted promptly and launched an investigation that led to Kigen’s arrest. According to a police statement, approximately 15 kilograms of red dog meat were recovered during the operation. The meat was neatly packed in plastic sacks and appeared ready for distribution.

“When questioned, the suspect admitted he intended to sell the dog meat to the public, who were unaware of its source,” said a police spokesperson from Sotik Police Station.

The County Veterinary Office was called in to assess the meat and assist in further investigations. The recovered meat was confirmed to be from a dog and has been taken in as evidence to support the upcoming legal process.

Kigen is expected to be charged with slaughtering an uninspected and undeclared animal contrary to Section 2 of the Meat Control Act, Cap 356 of the Laws of Kenya, as well as animal cruelty.

“The law is clear. Animals meant for human consumption must be declared, inspected, and handled according to regulations,” said the county veterinary officer. “This kind of activity poses a serious public health risk.”

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious meat sales or slaughter activities in their neighborhoods.

“We will not tolerate illegal meat trade, especially where public health is at risk,” the police warned.
