Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has been set free by Tanzanian authorities, Foreign Affairs cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed.

According to Boniface Mwangi’s family, he was brought back to Kenya by road, and abandoned in Ukunda, Kwale County.

His release came amid growing pressure from the Kenyan government, the civil society and citizens.

Meanwhile, Mwangi has been rushed to the hospital for medical attention, his family has disclosed.

He has been missing since Monday, after going to Tanzania to attend the court hearing of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

On Thursday May 22, 2025 in the morning, concerns over the activist’s whereabouts escalated into a diplomatic row, with the Kenyan government accusing Tanzanian authorities of withholding information on Mwangi’s status.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Kenya had made multiple unsuccessful attempts to get updates from Tanzanian officials.
