Zubeidah Kananu of Standard Group has been re-elected as the President of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) after defeating Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara in a closely contested election. Kananu garnered 72 votes against Okwara’s 58 in polls held during the Guild’s Annual General Meeting.
The election, overseen by Advocate Sophie Kaibiria, saw members vote via an online portal and SMS. Following her win, Ms. Kananu thanked members for their continued trust and vowed to strengthen the fight for media freedom and editorial independence.
“This victory has renewed my resolve to serve the Guild with dedication and continue championing press freedom,” she stated.
Francis Openda of Radio Africa Group was elected unopposed as Deputy President.
Other elected council members include:
- Millicent Awuor (KBC) – Television Representative
- Linda Bach (People Daily) – Print Representative
- Kenfrey Kiberenge (Nation Media Group) – Online Representative
- Agnes Mwangangi (KBC) – Radio Representative, defeating former holder Toepista Nabusoba
- Dr. Julius Bosire (Technical University of Kenya) – Academia Representative, beating Nathan Masambu of Daystar University
The Trustees elected unopposed are Ruth Nesoba, Martin Masai, and Ng’ang’a Mbugua.
The new Executive Council will serve a two-year term from 2025 to 2027 as stipulated in the KEG Constitution.

In addition, the Guild has launched a constitutional review process led by a nine-member committee chaired by Pamela Sittoni. The committee is tasked with collecting and consolidating proposed amendments from members to strengthen the Guild’s governance framework.
