Police in Sondu Town have arrested six suspects and recovered a stolen cow after joint operation with community members, signaling a breakthrough in a livestock theft case reported in Kamango B Village, North Nyakach Division, Kisumu County.
This was after Peter Odede on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at approximately 5:00 am reported about the missing two cows at the homes of his two neighbors namely Mr. Osiyo Agola and Mr. Dulo Awiti.
Local authorities quickly acted upon the report and informed the livestock owners to report the theft at Kapsorok ASTU Camp, a nearby police post which was swiftly followed by a search operation in the neighbouring area with the main goal being retrieving the stolen animals before it was too late.
Police intensified the search with trails and community tip-offs proving crucial as finally a lead emerged indicating that the stolen animals had been spotted at the Sondu slaughterhouse.
This new intel prompted quick response by officers from ASTU (Anti-Stock Theft Unit), the Chief of East Nyakach Mr. Jairus Okungu, the OCS Sondu Mr. Wanjohi, OCS Katito Mr. Alan, Assistant Chief Zablon Owiti, Assistant Chief Charles Ochola, Katito Police officers, and members of the community policing units.
Despite the quick and coordinated response by the multi agency team, the two stolen cows had already been slaughtered by the time the officers got to the slaughterhouse leaving behind hides, heads, and other remains at the scene.
Police however managed to apprehend six suspects namely Mary Anyango, Ken Daddy, Joseph Oguta, Hassan Amin,Erick Kipsang and Charles Rono
The suspects are currently at Sondu police station awaiting arraignment in court on Monday, May 26, 2025, to face charges related to livestock theft, illegal slaughter, and handling of stolen property.
Meanwhile, police are seeking to dismantle the broader network behind the livestock theft syndicate as more suspects are expected to be arrested.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity involving livestock transportation or slaughter, especially in non-designated facilities,” said Chief Jairus Okungu.
