City businessman Joseph Kairo Wambui, popularly known as Khalif Kairo, was on Monday arraigned at the Nyeri Law Courts where he was charged with tax fraud amounting to KSh 1.2 million.
According to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kairo, who owns the car dealership Kai & Karo Limited, is accused of deliberately misdeclaring a high-end Range Rover Vogue as a used Range Rover Sport on January 10, 2024, in a bid to evade customs duty totaling KSh 1,283,830.
He was charged with knowingly engaging in fraudulent evasion of tax payments. Kairo pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond of KSh 500,000. The case is scheduled for mention on June 4, 2025.
If convicted, the businessman could face a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine not exceeding KSh 1 million.
In January 2025, he appeared before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi facing charges of defrauding two clients of KSh 2.1 million and KSh 2.9 million, respectively.
Court documents allege that between July 10 and July 29, 2024, Kairo duped a customer in Westlands, Nairobi, by pretending he could import a Honda SUV from Japan, which was never delivered. In a separate case from the same month, he is accused of receiving payment for a Subaru SUV but failing to deliver the vehicle.
Following his appearance in court, Kairo was re-arrested later that month over similar complaints.
