Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has confirmed construction of the Isiolo- Mandera highway is already underway through a statement posted on his official Facebook page. The DP made impromptu visits for an inspection tour at various sections of the project to oversee construction works of the 750-kilometre highway being constructed at a whooping cost of KSh 100 billion making it one of the most expensive road projects in the country.
”The construction of the 750 kilometer Isiolo- Mandera Highway at a cost of 100 billion shillings is finally underway, after decades of pledges by successive governments.” Part of the statement read.
DP Kindiki emphasized that the government is committed to delivering the project within the stipulated timeline of 2 years hence the idea of segmenting it into 11 sections and awarding it to seven different contractors hailing this as the most serious move undertaken by any government to realizing and unlocking the potential of Northern Kenya. The Isiolo-Mandera highways connects Isiolo, Kula Mawe, Modogashe, Samatar, Wajir, Tarbaj, Kotulo, Kobo, Elwak, Garre, Rhamu, and finally Mandera.
“The project has been structured to avoid delays and ensure every section progresses simultaneously. The goal is not only to build a road but to build a future,” Kindiki added.
Northern Kenya residents have over the years had to deal with impassable roads and inaccessible national markets hence this road aims at improving mobility for residents and opening up the region to trade, tourism, and investment.
The road is not only expected to economically boost the region but also play a crucial role in enhancing security in a region that has over the years faced inter-communal conflicts and terrorism “This road is not just about development. It is a strategic national asset in the fight against insecurity and marginalization,” said DP Kindiki.
Residents don’t just view this project as a dream come true but an indication their voice is finally being heard at the national level.
DP Kindiki concluded by insisting the government is committed to implement high-impact infrastructure across the whole country.
