A section of opposition leaders have condemned what they termed as “state-sponsored terror” following the alleged abduction and torture of Juja MP George Koimburi, who is currently receiving treatment at Karen Hospital in Nairobi.

The leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi visited the MP on Monday and strongly criticized the government over rising cases of forced disappearances targeting opposition figures.

“Just a few days ago, our own President assured the Finnish President that there would be no more abductions. Yet here we are today , with another abductee, an Honorable Member of Parliament,” said Eugene Wamalwa.

Koimburi is reported to have been abducted on Sunday, days after police allegedly began searching for him. According to Justin Muturi, “On Friday last week, police were looking for Hon. Koimburi. He escaped, but his driver was arrested. Then on Sunday, he disappeared is it really rocket science to connect the dots?”

Muturi dismissed police statements on the incident, telling Inspector General Japhet Koome Kanja to “tell that story to the birds, not to Kenyans.”

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka went further, claiming the existence of a “special abduction squad” allegedly designed to suppress opposition activity. Referring to comments allegedly made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo warned of increasing political intolerance in the country.

“There is an abduction squad in this country. We are awake, and Kenyans are awake. Nothing will stop them from sending this regime home,” Kalonzo said.

He confirmed that MP Koimburi was conscious and slowly regaining his voice, with his wife by his side. He thanked Karen Hospital for the care provided, but rebuked claims that Koimburi staged his own abduction.

“We say: shame on anyone who dares suggest that a leader like Hon. Koimburi would stage his own abduction,” Kalonzo added. “All public officers, from the President to the police, must remember they are accountable to the people under the Constitution.”

The opposition is now calling for a full and independent investigation into Koimburi’s alleged abduction, as public concern grows over rising threats to political freedoms in the country.
