Chelsea Football Club has made history on 28th May 2025, after a 4-1 victory over Real Betis at Stadion Wroclaw, Poland to be crowned 2025 UEFA Conference League Champions.
Chelsea became the first club to win all five major UEFA trophies—the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup, and the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup—with this victory, which also made them the winners of Europe’s tertiary club competition.
Real Betis took an early lead in the 9th minute with a goal from Abde Ezzalzouli and went on to hold the lead through the first half before Chelsea turned things around in the second half.
Cole Palmer proved to be the architect of the comeback as he produced the cross for Enzo Fernandez to head in the equalizer in the 65th minute. Another assist from Palmer- man of the match was converted by Nicolas Jackson 5 minutes later.
With 7 minutes left to play, substitute Jodan Sancho whipped in a stunner into the far corner to put the Blues up 3-1. Moses Caicedo sealed the deal with another goal in added time.
This triump was Chelsea’s first major silverwear their 2021 Champions League win and the first under the management of Ezo Maresca. Maresca emphasize that win could be the foundation for building a winning mentality within the squad.
“Hopefully, this can be the starting point for building a winning mentality,” said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. “To grow, you need to win games and win competitions — lifting this trophy will make us stronger. But I’m also incredibly proud of the journey we’ve taken in the Premier League.
It’s the toughest league in the world, demanding consistency over 38 matches. Achieving what we have with the youngest squad in Premier League history is truly remarkable.”
For Real Betis, this was their first appearance in a European final. Despite a strong start, they were unable to maintain the momentum against the more hungry Chelsea side and their second half resurgence.
Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini expressed his disappointment following the 4–1 defeat to Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League final, attributing the loss to second-half injuries that disrupted his team’s performance.
“We were superior in the first half, scoring a goal and creating more opportunities,” Pellegrini noted. “However, the injuries to Ricardo and Abde in the second half significantly affected our performance, especially on the left side, which allowed Chelsea to turn the game around in just a few minutes.”
Despite the defeat, Pelligrini acknowledged the significance of reaching the finals and emphasised the need to rebuild foor future competitions.
