The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) is demanding a full investigation into the suspicious killings of two Catholic priests: Father James Maina of the Nyahururu Diocese and Father Alois Bett of the Eldoret Diocese.
In the statement released on Friday 29th, May, the bishops expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the respective dioceses and families of the deceased priests. They described the circumstances surrounding both deaths as disturbing, calling it “veiled malicious intent and mystery.”
Father James Maina is reported to have died while undergoing treatment, with signs pointing to a possible kidnapping and poisoning suggesting foul play. On the other hand Father Alois Bett was gunned down by unidentified assailants while returning from church.
The bishops raised serious concerns over the safety of clergy, particularly those serving in remote areas, and questioned how such targeted violence could occur with apparent impunity. “How can there be no security for God’s servants?” they asked. They also decried the growing disregard for human life, stating that killings are now “taken lightly and used carelessly for political expediency.”
Highlighting the critical role priests play in supporting the marginalized and vulnerable in society, the KCCB called for a prompt and thorough investigation to uncover the true motives behind the killings. They urged the government to act decisively to ensure the safety of all citizens.
President William Ruto has already assured the nation that the government will pursue justice and restore calm in the volatile Kerio Valley region.
