Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale has issued a heartfelt apology to patients and families affected by the breakdown of a vital cancer treatment machine at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring full oncology services as a matter of urgency.

This comes after KNH announced that its Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta machine, a crucial component in the hospital’s radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients, suffered an unexpected technical failure and is currently out of service.

In a press release dated 28th May the hospital announced an immediate activation of referral protocols to ensure continuity of care for cancer patients who rely on radiotherapy treatments.

“We deeply regret the disruption and inconvenience this has caused to cancer patients relying on uninterrupted treatment,” said CS Duale. “We recognize the emotional and physical toll of cancer, and no patient should have to endure additional distress due to equipment failure.”

The CS assured the public that the Ministry of Health is fast-tracking the procurement of a replacement LINAC machine through the appropriate tendering process. “We are treating this with the urgency it deserves to ensure continuity of care and restore critical oncology services at KNH as quickly as possible,” he said.

In the interim, the hospital has activated referral protocols to alternative facilities to ensure patients continue to receive necessary treatment. The Cobalt radiotherapy machine, which had previously broken down, is now fully operational and helping to manage the current patient load.

“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of care. Our focus is on the safety, dignity, and health outcomes of our patients. We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by all those affected,” CS Duale added.
