Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.- Manchester United post season tour took a disheartening turn as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur on May 28th 2025.
The match which was part of the Maybank Challenge Cup, was held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium and witnessed by over 72,000 fans who came to witness the English giants take stage in Asia.
The friendly exhibition was not short of stars including five time champions league winner, Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Rasmus Højlund, and André Onana. Despite fielding its top talents, United once again struggled to find rhythm and cohesion.
Manchester United conceded the decisive goal in the 71st minute from Myanmar international Maung Maung Lwin who capitalized on a defensive lapse my united.
Man United’s efforts to get back in the game proved futile as the game concluded on a 1-0 defeat, a result that wasn’t taken lightly by what seemed to be a multitude of overseas United fans.
United coach Rueben Amorim called out his side for the dismal performance and vowed to make significant changes before the next match.
“We should win these kind of games, no matter what. We need to bring that inside of us in every game.
“The important thing is no injuries with this weather and to arrive here in this day. It is not an excuse, we should perform better.”
Amorim went on to praise the youngsters in the game , saying: “I liked the young kids, they try. That’s enough for me in the moment.
“They want to play more but we have to rotate everybody to play. They did well.” Amorim concluded.
Fans expressed their frustrations with booes after the final whistle and as Manchester United playes exited the pitch, a reaction that even manager Rueben Amorin acknowledged.
“I always feel guilty for the performance of the team since I am here in the first game,” Amorim stated. “The boos from the fans, maybe it is something we need because every game that we lost in the Premier League they were always there.”
The defeat adds to a myriad of shortcomings Manchester United has had to endure this season. They finished 15th in the premier league and failed to clutch at a straw at the Europa League finals with a similar defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs.
This loss has intensified scrutiny over United’s performance and strategy, with fans and analysts calling for significant changes ahead of the new season.
The club’s next fixture is against the Hong Kong national team on May 30, concluding their Asia tour.
