Two people at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital in Machakos County have been confirmed to have contracted the Monkey Pox virus and have been placed in isolation units.
The hospital’s medical superintendent, Juliet Munyao, said that the two were found to have symptoms of the disease last Friday. Their tests were collected, then sent to the laboratory, where the results Wednesday confirmed that they were infected with the Mpox virus.
Juliet also said that there are no challenges facing the hospital and the patients continue to receive appropriate treatment.
The Public Health Officer in the Kangundo Sub-county Fredrick Kimemia, has also urged residents to follow health measures to prevent the spread of this virus, while warning citizens about the symptoms of this disease in order to receive early treatment without further harm.
In April, the government announced the arrival of 10,700 doses of the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Nordic (MVA-BN) Mpox vaccines to control the ongoing outbreak.
This was done through collaborative efforts and support from the Africa CDC, World Health Organisation, UNICEF and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, since the outbreak on July 31, 2024, 67 Mpox cases have been confirmed so far from 13 counties that include Busia (22), Mombasa (12), Nakuru (10), Makueni (6), Bungoma (3), Nairobi (3), Kajiado (2), Taita Taveta (2), Kericho (2), Kilifi (2), Kiambu (1), Uasin Gishu (1) and Migori (1).
