The Missionary Benedictine Sisters have announced the indefinite closure of their mission in Kerio Valley, following the rising insecurity and the recent killing of Father Alloys Bett, the parish priest of St. Mathias Mulumba, Tot Parish.

In an official notice released on Friday 30th May, 2025, the Sisters stated that the volatile situation has led to psychological trauma among the missionaries and forced staff to flee, making it impossible to continue essential services.

“Our action is meant to ensure the safety of our sisters, employees, and those who seek services at the mission,” said Sr. Rosa Pascal , Prioress of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters. She also urged the government to pursue lasting peace in the region, including the disarmament of civilians.

The Sisters added that their presence in the area depends on the community recognizing the value of their work and the restoration of a secure environment.

The mission will remain closed until further notice.

Father Bett was attacked and killed by suspected bandits while on his way to conduct a church service, .

Confirming the incident, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said, “The priest was heading to a church mass when he was ambushed and fatally shot by criminals believed to be livestock thieves.”

The incident comes as a curfew of six pm has been put in the area and security operations continue in parts of Kerio Valley to flush out armed bandits and restore stability. Police have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further attacks.

Through his social media accounts President William Ruto promised that his administration would bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, Bishop Dominic Kimengich has called for justice following the tragic killing of Fr. Bett.

The late Rev. Fr.Alloys Cheruiyot Bett will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025 at Holy Family Parish Ollessos.

His body will leave MTRH Mortuary on Monday 2nd June 2025 for viewing at 2PM and requiem Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral,Eldoret.

The funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish OlLessos,Nandi Pastoral Region,before the burial.
