Paris Saint Germain defied all odds to secure a historic first treble in the club’s history by humiliating Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan 5-0 at Allianz Arena in Munich 31st May in what was a one-sided affair.
A youthful PSG side dominated proceedings right away from kick off with their early efforts on goal paying off in the 11th minute after Achraf Hakimi finished off a wonderful team move helped by a defensive error by Federico Dimarco marking the first goal of the night to set the tone for what would turn into a nightmare final for their opponents.
The midfield trio of Vitinha, Ugarte and Warren Zaire controlled the tempo with maturity and purpose, starving Inter of meaningful possession and dictating every phase of play. This allowed PSG forward line comprised of Ousman Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratshelia to mount constant pressure on Inter’s defence forcin them in their own half. Of the trio, perhaps 19 year old Doue was the brightest delivering 2 goals and an assist. Kvaratshelia and Senny Mayulu added the fourth and fifth goals respectively so seal PSG’s victory hence ending a decade-long obsession of the Qatari ownership, who took over the club in 2011 with the stated ambition of conquering Europe.
Head coach Luis Enrique was impressed with his team’s performance towards achieving that historic victory and even claiming Dembele deserves a shout at the Balon d’ Or for the season he has had.
“I would give Dembele the Balon d’Or for how he defended today! He worked hard, he was humble, so, without a shadow of a doubt he deserves that, not just for the goals that he scored but for the pressing, what a season from him” said Enrique
On the opposite side an emotionally broken Simone Inzaghi who stormed the final by crashing favorites Barcelona was full of praise for PSG stating they were the better team.
“We are very disappointed clearly but we had a great campaign in the champions league and as a coach I’m proud but clearly we are not satisfied with tonight’s game, we didn’t play well, they outplayed us and deserved to win” said Inzaghi.
Simone Inzaghi’s side have got to the final twice in three seasons and lost both, and this defeat comes a week after they missed out on the Serie A title to Napoli culminating into a trophyles season, and their ageing side will need to be rebuilt.
