Kenyan Gospel artist Lawrence Karanja popularly known as Weezdom has disclosed his harrowing 4 months period during which he struggled with depression, suicidal thoughts and mental health issues due to alcohol addiction. His revelation comes seven months after he left rehab in October 2024.
According to Weezdom, his addiction began in 2020 during the COVID-19 period. During this time he lost his record label management and therefore couldn’t afford the lifestyle he used to turning to alcohol as many youths do whenever financial pressure is unbearable.
“Nlijipata najali sana kwa vitu siezi control kwa huo muda ndio zikanifikisha kwa addiction and now addiction ya alcohol iliharibu hadi viungo vyangu vya mwili kama vile pancrease na liver,” Weedom confessed.
The gospel artist has insisted that once you’re an addict you will always find yourself going back to the old you unless you make your own conscious decision to quit addiction revealing he fought the urge of falling back during and after rehab and later overcame it.
“Jambo linaloweza kumsaidia mtu anayepona kwa sasa, yule ako rehabi, na yule karibu kutaka kuacha, ni kufanya uamuzi wako mwenyewe. Hata ukapelekwa rehab gani, hutawahi kuacha chochote unachokumbana nacho mpaka wewe mwenyewe ukafanye uamuzi wako” he emphasized.
Weezdom also highlighted environment and familiar faces as some of the things that greatly impact many relapses advising those who come out of rehab to avoid going back to the same old environment.
According to Weezdom, he once considered committing suicide due to the financial pressure that came with losing his record label management. His four kids and other obligations were too much responsibility for him.
“I attempted suicide at my mum’s rural home, its something I’ve never contemplated but I found myself in that situation where I thought it isn’t worth living anymore,” he revealed.
The popular gospel artist now reaffirms that he has left behind his past and ready to forge a better future post rehab. His addiction case is just one of the many that celebrities are going through.
