The opposition led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come under sharp criticism following recent remarks made by the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, which appeared to suggest a casual attitude toward electoral malpractice.

The former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General sparked outrage after he claimed during a stopover in Voi, Taita Taveta County on Saturday 7th June 2025 while on a tour with DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo that the Kenya Kwanza coalition had “expertise in stealing votes.”

“Tungependa kuwaambia wale walimsaidia rais Ruto kuiba kura sasa wako hapa, hakuna kura ataiba hata moja,” Malala remarked.

While his comments were likely intended as political bravado, many have interpreted them as a troubling reflection on the coalition’s approach to elections. They have drawn strong reactions from across the political spectrum. Reacting to the comments, Philip Etale, ODM’s communications Director condemned Malala’s sentiments calling them misleading.

“Hehe, if Malala’s remarks about STEALING VOTES and how they are experts in that field are anything to go by, then the opposition has lost the plot. They need to focus on issues rather than talking of how they will STEAL THE VOTE.”

According to many, Malala’s sentiments may undermine public’s confidence in the Elctoral and Boundaries Commission’s activities especially with a series of by-elections to come and the 2027 general election just less than 2 years away.

As the debate continues, Kenyans are left grappling with what such statements mean for the credibility of future elections and the overall health of the country’s democratic institutions.
