Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) detectives in Nairobi have arrested Rev. Richard Macharia Njuguna at Overstone Hotel in Ruiru area along the Eastern Bypass, Njuguna is accused of impersonating an officer and defrauding an unsuspecting Ethiopian refugee over KSh 3 million in pretence of helping the Ethiopian citizen obtain Kenyan Citizenship.

According to police report a complaint was lodged at the Capitol Hill Police Station in Nairobi before the case was subsequently transferred to the ATPU for thorough investigation. It is after this that an intelligence-led operation led to his arrest.

“Investigations have since revealed that between December 20, 2024, and February 12, 2025, Rev. Njuguna, posing as an Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) officer attached to the Directorate of Immigration Services, cunningly duped the refugee into believing he could facilitate the acquisition of Kenyan citizenship, fraudulently obtaining a total of Sh3,030,500 in the process,” the police statement read.

The police also recovered a number of items and documents after they conducted a search at his home in Kahawa West and in his vehicle. The suspect along with the evidence are now in police custody undergoing processing and later arraignment.

“The search led to the recovery of incriminating evidence including a variety of documents and wooden stamps allegedly belonging to several institutions, such as the Chief Magistrate in Nairobi, Kenya Immigration Officer at JKIA, Immigration Control in Busia, the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Somalia, and the Ministry of Lands Head Office,” the statement added.

As this unfolds the police remain vigilant and appeal to Kenyans to report any suspicious activities or individuals to relevant authorities
