Orange Democratic movement (ODM) has threatened to withdraw from the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA), over lack of thorough investigations into the death of 31-year-old teacher and influencer Albert Ojwang.

Speaking on floor of the house, ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi stated that the agreement between ODM and UDA was that abductions and killings were not going to be witnessed in the country again. This come after the autopsy report dismissed earlier allegations that Ojwang’ had died of self inflicted pain by hitting himself against the wall several times while in isolation.

“We signed an MOU with UDA and agreed that we are not going to have abductions and killings like this one. If we do not get proper answers from the UDA government, we will consider this as a breach of the MoU we have with UDA,” Osotsi said.

Osotsi’s tough warning comes after his party leader Raila Odinga condemned the death and demanded full probe and justice. This condemnation by Raila and pro government members of ODM signify a shift in political dynamics as Raila has been accused of maintaining silence amid increased cases of police brutality since the formation of broad-based government.

Albert Ojwang’ died on Sunday, June 8, while in police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi, following his arrest over alleged false publication on social media against DIG of police Eliud Lagat.

Government pathologist Bernard Midia, after completing an autopsy on his body on Tuesday, revealed that Ojwang’ did not hit himself on the wall as earlier reported in a police report. This has intensified calls for immediate resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Langat by a number of opposition leaders and human rights groups.
