Shock and grief has engulfed Jacaranda Gardens estate in Roysambu, Nairobi County, after a man reportedly killed his niece by throwing her off the balcony.
Reports indicate that the man returned home inebriated on Wednesday, June 11 night and started causing disturbance.
According to the Jacaranda Gardens management, the intoxicated uncle created commotion. At this time, the parents of the girl were not home, only the deceased and the house girl.
“The uncle overpowered the house girl and snatched baby Amanda from her. The house girl, sensing danger, ran out of the apartment screaming for help,” Lilian Gichuru, the property manager, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, the uncle threw baby Amanda from the balcony.”
Security guards and neighbours who responded to the screams rushed, only to be met with an appalling scene. They were able to subdue the uncle and called officers from Kiamumbi Police Station.
The neighbours rushed the girl to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, she died while undergoing treatment.
Police officers, let by OCS Kiamumbi Police Statiion, responded and arrested the suspect. However, due to injuries sustained after angry residents descended on him, they opted to take him to Kiambu Hospital for medical attention.
So far, the house girl has recorded a statement at Kiamumbi Police Station, even as the case is being referred to Kahawa West Police Station.
Kahawa West police have so far visited KU Referral Hospital for documentation, before escalating the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“In respect to [the girl], we propose a candle lighting ceremony at the accident scene from 7:00 pm today. You are all welcome to join us in honouring her memory. As a community we have lost an outgoing and vibrant soul,” the management proposed.
