Former police spokesperson Charles Owino has issued a sharp criticism on the law enforcement agencies handling the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

Speaking on The Insight show on Tv 47, Owino, pointed out poor coordination between the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service (NPS). This comes after bosses of the two security agencies appeared before Senate to answer questions from senators on the death of Ojwang’.

“In law enforcement on controversial issues, what should happen is, they need to sit as a team with a clear narrative after confirmation,” said Charles Owino.

Owino warned that by dodging responsibility, criminals could exploit the case by creating misleading narratives that divert public attention and unfairly target officers who may not have been involved.

“In any investigation you must be broad. Criminals can create narratives and divert people attention to crucifying people who are not involved,” Owino added.

‎‎Meanwhile, Capt. (Rtd) Simiyu Werunga, CEO of the Africa Centre for Security Studies, highlighted that the key to ending extrajudicial killings in the country might just be meticulous investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.

“We want step by step points on what happened to Albert Ojwang. If we get his death right, we might solve extrajudicial killings,” said Werunga.
