The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), in partnership with the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA), has confirmed that assets linked to former Migori Governor Okoth Obado worth Ksh 428 Million and his associates are set to be auctioned on the 23rd of this month.
The consent was recorded before High Court judge Esther Maina, where the EACC said they had settled the matter and that it did not wish to pursue the two cases of Ksh1.9 billion and Ksh73 million involving unexplained wealth and proceeds of crime against Obado, his four children, businessman Jared Peter Oluoch Kwaga, and his firms.
The Assets Recovery Agency and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission are moving to seize properties believed to have been bought with stolen public funds.
“The person we were investigating came forward and said, ‘Look, instead of dragging this case in court, I am willing to surrender,” Abdi Ahmed, EACC CEO, stated.
The two agencies identified the properties to be auctioned in Nairobi today, with the exercise expected to be extended to Kisumu and Migori.
Properties set to be auctioned include a luxurious Loresho Ridge house valued at Ksh. 40 million, a three-bedroom Riara apartment worth Ksh. 22 million, an unfinished plot in Runda valued at Ksh 50 million ,two Greenspan Estate apartments valued at Ksh.18 million and a Greenspan maisonette with a servant’s quarter valued at Ksh. 14.5 million.
“In that process, our and his lawyers met and they were able to agree in a process of negotiations where we agreed on the minimum amount we are to recover,” EACC CEO Abdi Ahmed Mohamoud revealed.
The properties believed to have been acquired through misappropriate public funds will be auctioned and the money returned back to public projects.
