ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has declared the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Kenya Kwanza Government and ODM party meaningless on the basis of the government’s failure to put an end to extrajudicial killings in the country.

According to Sifuna, the pact agreed upon on March 7, 2025, following an agreement between President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga included putting an end to extrajudicial killings and police brutality and not just fostering unity and inclusive growth in the country as it has been perceived by many.

Meanwhile Sifuna has cited the recent death of influencer/teacher Albert Ojwang who died on Sunday June 8, 2025 at Central Police Station in Nairobi, just hours after being picked up by officers in Homa Bay County and the Friday June 14 death of another a middle-aged man inside a police cell in Katito police station in Nyakach as cases of violation of that Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

“For me, if you ask me as Sifuna, the agreement we signed with UDA is meaningless as I speak today, because how can we agree that no youths will be killed, and yet just the other day, one was taken from his home and killed in a cell?” Sifuna asked.

“Others were taken from Elgeyo Marakwet, beaten, had their hands cut off, and dumped in Nakuru. Another one died in a police station here in Katito. That’s why I’m saying that agreement is meaningless,” he added.

Sifuna who has been a vocal critic of the Broad-Based Government issued a stern warning demanding for accountability warning that ODM could withdraw from the pact if action is not taken. His remarks come in the wake of extensive investigations by multi agency teams lead by the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority which has led to arrest of three suspects in connection to the death of Albert Ojwang.

Among those arrested are Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam and Police Constable James Mukhwana, while IPOA continues to treat several other officers as suspects in the ongoing probe.

Sifuna’s sentiments were echoed by ODM Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, who joined the growing calls for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, following his alleged connection to the death of Albert Ojwang’.

“What is the Deputy IG still doing in the office? By now he should resign or President Ruto sack him,” Osotsi demanded.
