Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat, has officially stepped aside from his position amid ongoing investigations into the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

In a statement released on Monday 16th June 2025, Lagat announced that his decision to step down was “conscious thought” of his role and responsibilities as The Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service.

“In view of the ongoing investigations on the unfortunate incident of the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang, I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” read part of Lagat’s statement.

Lagat’s announcement was perhaps expected and long awaited by majority of Kenyans and human rights groups after public outrage over his possible involvement in the death of Ojwang just a few hours after he was taken into police custody.

In his resignation letter, Lagat also extended his condolences to Ojwang’s family and assured of his support in the ongoing investigations of Ojwang’s murder.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident. I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang for their great loss,”

This resignation marks the most significant shakeup in the police department since the death of Ojwang despite Interior Cabinet Secretary earlier assuring the nation that the government was doing everything possible to ensure justice was served.
