A man who was shot by a police officer during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District is currently receiving medical treatment, in critical condition.
According to the National Police Service (NPS) the officer, who fired an anti-riot shotgun and seriously injured the unarmed civilian, has since been arrested and will be arraigned in court. The arrest was ordered by Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, with the NPS condemning the officer’s actions as unacceptable.
In a statement, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga added that while the Service is taking disciplinary action against the officer, it has also launched investigations into violent elements who infiltrated the protests. Some individuals were reportedly armed with crude weapons.
“The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law,” Nyaga stated.
Tuesday’s protests were sparked by growing public outrage over police brutality, including the recent mysterious death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
