Police in Mombasa have arrested two activists who were protesting demanding justice for Albert Ojwang’, the blogger and teacher who died in police custody.
The two, part of a group of demonstrators are currently being held at Central Police Station. Authorities say the suspects were leading a procession without a valid permit, contrary to public order regulations.
The protest, organized by civil society activists, briefly disrupted transport operations in parts of Mombasa as demonstrators marched while chanting slogans calling for justice and police accountability.
According to police, the group had submitted a request to hold the protest on Saturday, but the application was denied. Despite the rejection, a section of the activists went ahead with the demonstration, prompting the arrests.
Police say two male protesters were taken into custody while dispersing the crowd. Sources indicate more arrests could follow if investigations reveal violations of the law.
Albert Ojwang’s death has sparked outrage nationwide, with activists demanding an independent probe after a police officer confessed that Ojwang’ was allegedly assaulted while in custody on orders from senior officers.
