Controversial televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya, widely known for his involvement in the infamous ‘miracle babies’ saga, has died.

Deya died in a road crash on the Kisumu-Bondo highway on Tuesday night a year after being acquitted in the child theft case.

The devastating road accident in Nambakapiyo along the Kisiani-Bondo road has left 31 others injured. Nyanza Region Traffic Commander Peter Maina, said the crash involved three vehicles; a school bus belonging to Moi University, a Toyota Fortuner owned by the county government of Siaya, and a Toyota Noah, which Deya was driving. The regional traffic commander Peter Maina stated that the bishop’s car veered off course, leading to the fatal collision.

The tragic incident occurred when Bishop Deya’s vehicle lost control after its brakes failed, crashing into a Moi University bus carrying 30 students before colliding with a Siaya County government vehicle.

Among the injured, 15 individuals are reported to be in critical condition and have been rushed to various hospitals in Kisumu County for urgent medical attention. The body of Bishop Deya was taken to Kombewa morgue in Kisumu as authorities continue investigations into the accident.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with emergency responders working tirelessly to rescue victims from the wreckage. The Moi University students, who were on board the bus, suffered varying degrees of injuries, with some receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.

The accident has sparked concerns over road safety, with residents calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies. Authorities have urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and adhere to speed limits to avoid accidents.

Bishop Gilbert Deya, a controversial religious leader, was known for his evangelical work both in Kenya and abroad. His sudden demise has left his followers in mourning, with many expressing their condolences and reflecting on his impact in the religious community.

As investigations continue, the Kisumu road users want to be  assured  that measures will be taken to enhance road safety and prevent further loss of lives.

This tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and responsible driving on Kenyan roads.
