The family of influencer Albert Ojwang remain firm in their decision not to bury the body until justice has been served for the brutal killing of their son while in police custody.

Herman Opiyo who is the family spokesperson says that having the Deputy inspector general Eliud Lagat stepping aside is not justice enough for their son and that all those responsible for the death of Ojwang have to be arrested.

“Kusema kwamba amejiuzuli si swala la familia kusherakea na si swala la kuongelea,” Opiyo states.

President William ruto passed down his condolences to the family by calling directly to Albert Ojwang’s father with President Ruto promising to give the family two million Kenyan shillings to help cover funeral costs, while opposition leader Raila Odinga, who also spoke to the family, pledged half the amount.

The family acknowledges the condolences from the President and other prime leaders in the country but they refuse to continue with burial ceremony of Albert until justice has been served to their son.

Deputy Inspector general Eliud Lagat has stepped down with other 6 police officers along with a technician accused of disabling the station’s CCTV been arraigned following the investigation of the brutal killing of Albert Ojwang.

But nearly 160 cases of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were reported across Kenya last year, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

At least 20 people have died while in police detention in the past four months alone, according to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, IPOA.
