Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto, has criticized her own generation ‘Millennials’ for failing to play a unifying role following growing tensions between Gen Z and Kenya’s older political leadership.

In a statement shared through her X account formally Twitter Charlene issued a call for a “generational ceasefire,” urging for calm and mutual understanding. But her strongest message was aimed at Millennials, whom she accused of neglecting their role as a bridge between two increasingly divided generations.

“We, as the older brothers and sisters who understand both generations, have failed to mediate for peaceful coexistence and offer our young people guidance on alternatives that don’t necessarily lead to violent riots,” she said.

Her remarks come in the wake of a wave of Gen Z-led protests across the country, which have resulted in deaths, arrests and destruction of property most notably the shooting of a mask vendor by police in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Charlene warned that Millennials have been largely passive in the face of youth frustration and societal breakdown, failing to offer mentorship or solutions that divert young people from destructive paths.

She challenged her peers to stop sitting on the sidelines and instead take up leadership roles.

Charlene said “I would partially blame us, the Millennials, for the endless and senseless conflict between the senior citizens and young Gen Zs,” .

Charlene advocated for non-violent alternatives such as intergenerational dialogue, policy-driven advocacy, and reform lobbying, sayingthat riots, cyberbullying, and cancel culture only worsen societal wounds and breed instability.

“Violence, revenge, rage hunting, cancel culture, hooliganism, cyberbullying, and violent riots will only erode our national culture, radicalize our youth, and induce dangerous instability,” she cautioned.

Charlene Ruto has in recent years positioned herself as a youth empowerment advocate, a cal she echoed in her statement.
