Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed unnamed politicians for planning the Wednesday, June 25, 2025 protests in an alleged attempt to overthrow the government.

In his address on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Murkomen branded the protests as “an attempted coup and an act of terror.”

Murkomen stated that the government knows the identities of those behind the protests and that investigations are ongoing to bring them to justice. He claimed the planners specifically targeted government officials, including the homes of some politicians allied to the government.

“We have names of political terrorists we are investigating over the chaos and anarchy. And I am sure you know them. Even the pattern of violence speaks for itself,” said the CS.

He added, “What unfolded yesterday was not a protest. It was terrorism disguised as dissent. There was no peaceful demonstration it was riots, chaos, and anarchy.”

Murkomen also claimed that some goons were ferried into Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) from parts of Mt. Kenya to incite violence, saying some were stranded until midnight.

“All those goons brought from Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri counties were left stranded in Nairobi past midnight.”

He condemned those behind the unrest, stating, “Let me, therefore, state unequivocally that we condemn the criminal anarchists who, in the name of peaceful demonstrations, unleashed a wave of violence, looting, sexual assault, and destruction upon our people.”

Murkomen revealed that more than ten Kenyans were killed, with investigations into the exact death toll still ongoing.

According to the Interior CS, at least 10 police stations were attacked and 5 torched during the unrest. A total of 88 vehicles were destroyed, including 65 civilian-owned. Armed criminals targeted police weapons and uniforms, stealing five firearms. Several courts, along with county and national government offices, were also set ablaze.
