The Senate is set to hold a special sitting on Monday, 30th June 2025, from 10am for an impeachment case against Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan following his removal by the County Assembly over abuse of office.

‎The special sitting was triggered after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi received a formal communication from Isiolo County Assembly on the governor’s removal.

‎“Pursuant to Standing Order 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Monday, 30th June, 2025, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate,” said Speaker Kingi through a gazette notice.

‎The notice further stated: “Upon receipt of a letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Isiolo, dated the 26th June, 2025 and received in the Office of the Speaker of the Senate on the 27th June, 2025, by which the Speaker of the County Assembly of Isiolo informed the Speaker of the Senate of the approval of a Motion for the removal from office by impeachment of Abdi Ibrahim Hassan, the Governor of Isiolo County.”

‎According to Speaker Kingi, the special sitting will commence at 10:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber at the Main Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

‎The agenda will feature two critical items: “the consideration of the Report of the Mediation Committee on the Division of Revenue Bill, 2025 (National Assembly Bills No. 10 of 2025) and the agreed version of the Division of Revenue Bill, 2025 (National Assembly Bills No. 10 of 2025); and the hearing of the charges against Mr. Abdi Ibrahim Hassan, the Governor of Isiolo County.”

‎Speaker Kingi emphasized that no other business will be entertained during the session. “In accordance with standing order 33 (5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this Notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the special sitting, following which the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, 8th July, 2025, at 2.30 p.m., in accordance with the Senate calendar,” he noted.

‎The sitting comes after Governor Abdi’s impeachment on Thursday when a staggering 16 out of 18 MCAs voted in favour of his impeachment over abuse of office allegations in a an event that was marred with chaos. The impeachment motion had been filed by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana.
