Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola has weighed in on Jurgen Klopp’s criticism of FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup currently in the knockout stages in USA.
Speaking at a press conference, Guardiola acknowledged Klopp’s concerns and offered a measured response that highlighted both his respect for Klopp’s views and the limits of managerial influence.
Klopp, the former Liverpool manager had termed the tournament “the worst idea ever implemented,” sparking fresh debate over the strain on players in an increasingly congested football calendar.
“We’ve fought together many times especially when it came to deciding the calendar and pushing for more quality,” said Guardiola. “When players and managers get proper rest, the quality of football improves.”
The Manchester City boss reflected on his positive relationship with Klopp despite their fierce battles on the pitch.
“I wasn’t surprised by what he said. I understand and respect him. We’ve had an incredible relationship over many years as rivals, and I get his argument,” Guardiola added.
However, he also underlined the reality that managers do not dictate the game’s schedule.
“At the same time, we’re in a job where we follow FIFA, UEFA, the Premier League all the competitions. Managers don’t organize the calendar. Everyone has their role, and others are the ones who organize these tournaments,” said Guardiola.
As the expanded Club World Cup approaches, Guardiola’s comments echo a broader frustration within the football world that decisions affecting player welfare often lie beyond the reach of those on the touchline.
