The government has announced a full waiver of medical bills for all victims injured during the June 17 and June 25, 2025 protests.

A mask vendor Boniface Kariuki, who was shot at close range by the police during June 17, protests whose medical bill had reached KSh 815,805 at the time of his passing, Monday 30, June 2025, is among the beneficially. The Ministry confirmed that this amount will also be waived.

Speaking on Monday after Kariuki was confirmed dead, his family asked the government to help clear the bill, which they said had surpassed KSh 3 million. However, the government now states the bill stands at KSh 815,805.

In a statement on Monday evening, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the government is deeply concerned about the injuries and trauma suffered by Kenyans during the demonstrations and is committed to supporting those affected.

“The recent demonstrations in Nairobi, resulted in injuries and emotional distress for many Kenyans. As a Ministry, our hearts go out to all those affected,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry has directed the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to pay all medical expenses related to protest injuries through the hospital’s Disaster Emergency Fund.

“We offer our deepest condolences to families who have lost loved ones and extend our support to all those still recovering,” said CS Duale.

This move by the Ministry is expected to bring some relief to grieving families and those still recovering from injuries sustained during the demonstrations.
