‎Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) counterpart Eugene Wamalwa have renewed calls for the sacking of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, following the death of Boniface Kariuki, a Nairobi mask vendor who was shot during June 17 protests.‎‎

Kariuki succumbed to his injuries yesterday at Kenyatta National Hospital. His death has sparked widespread outrage, with Kenyans accusing the police of using excessive force to quell the protests.‎

“The United Opposition has already asked our lawyers as well as The People’s Restorative Justice Commission headed by Speaker Emeritus JB Muturi to act on this grave injustice. There will be justice as well as exemplary damages for Boniface’s family, ” stated Kalonzo.

The two opposition leaders had visited Kariuki’s family in Githurai, Nairobi, to condole with them. During the visit, Wamalwa urged lawmakers to take decisive action against CS Murkomen.‎

“We are urging our Members of Parliament to support an impeachment motion of the Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen,” Wamalwa said.‎‎

His sentiments were echoed by Kalonzo, who condemned the police response to the protests.‎

“That video of Boniface Kariuki has circulated across the world, exposing the face of poor leadership in Kenya,” Kalonzo stated.

Meanwhile, the family, through their spokesperson Emily Wanjira, announced plans to conduct a private post-mortem on their son

‎‎In addition to demanding Murkomen’s ouster, Kalonzo called on the government to release all protestors arrested during and after the demonstrations.

‎“We are saying that all those arrested for participating in peaceful, constitutional protests should be released immediately,” he said.‎‎

The opposition has vowed to continue pushing for police accountability, warning that if constitutional avenues fail, they will press for Murkomen’s impeachment in Parliament.
