The Senate has scheduled special sittings to investigate the proposed impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan.

According to a Gazette Notice issued by Speaker Amason Kingi, the sessions will take place on July 8th, 9th, and 10th, 2025, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day in the Senate Chamber, Nairobi.

The move follows a resolution by the Senate on Monday June 30, 2025, to consider charges against the governor under Section 33(3) of the County Governments Act.

The impeachment hearings will be the sole agenda during the special sittings, after which the Senate will adjourn until July 15, 2025.

Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo was impeached on June 26, 2025 after the County Assembly passed a motion to remove him from office.

Sixteen out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of the motion. Two members were absent. No one opposed the motion.

According to the county assembly, the Governor did not appear before the Assembly to defend himself despite being formally invited. His absence was recorded, and the session proceeded in line with Standing Orders.

The impeachment followed weeks of debate, public engagement, and legal consultations across the county’s ten wards.

Guyo is also accused of employing a bloated executive of 36 advisors, 31 Chief Officers, and two Deputy County Secretaries, positions not recognised in law, thereby inflating the county’s wage bill to 46 per cent of its annual revenue, above the 35 per cent ceiling set under the Public Finance Management Regulations.

Further, the motion alleges the governor ignored constitutional principles on public service by creating offices without involving the County Public Service Board and failed to act on resolutions of the County Assembly regarding public debt management.
