A video has resurfaced showing the emotional moment Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack Ojwang’ pleaded with mourners not to take his son’s body to Magwego Police Post, the station where Ojwang was allegedly first detained before being moved to Nairobi, where he later died in police custody.

In the footage, the grieving father is seen begging mourners to take a different course, but his appeals are ignored. The crowd, fueled by anger and grief, proceeded with the casket to the station in protest.

A conversation is heard between Meshack and a resident where he was being told that the mourners wanted the body to be taken to the police station.

”Wanataka mwende station,” said the resident. ”Station tunaenda kufanya nini na tumetoka mbali? Muhimu ni kuona ule mwili tumwachie Mungu mambo mengine. ” he said.

He pleaded with the youth to have mercy on Ojwang’s mother but all that was ignored. ”Huyu mama (Ojwang’s mother) ameumia, ule ubinadamu na uwepo pia kwa sababu huyu ni mama yao pia.” he said.

Shortly after, chaos broke out and the station was set ablaze. Though no casualties were reported, the building suffered extensive damage.

It took officers from Kendu Bay Police Station to restore calm at the facility in Karachuonyo Constituency.

Ojwang’s death has triggered public outrage, with residents accusing police of involvement.

Tension remains high in Kokwanyo village the home of Ojwang’ where is is being laid to rest Friday 4, July 2024.

There are claims that on Friday morning, Irate youths and residents turned police officers away, and blocked them from attending the burial ceremony.

Ojwang was killed at the Nairobi Central police cells on June 7 after his arrest in Homa Bay. So far, at least six persons have been charged with the murder of Ojwang, among them Central Police OCS Samson Talam and Police Constable James Mukhwana
