Opposition leaders have accused National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula of orchestrating an attack on their convoy during on their way to Kitale at Chwele Market in Bungoma County on Friday, July 4.

The leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i, JB Muturi, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya were touring the region when their convoy was reportedly attacked by a group of rowdy youth.

In a post on her official X platform Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka said. ”Speaker Moses Wetangula’s state-sponsored goons throwing stones and firing bullets under the protection of Riot Police did not deter our March to Kitale.”

Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the violence, calling it “an attack on democracy,” and directly blamed Wetang’ula.

”Mr Speaker Moses Wetangula hear the people of Chwele, Western and Kenya clearly: The United Opposition won’t be intimidated by your #WanTam sanctioned stone throwing goons. Not now, not today, not ever.” he stated.

Former deputy President rigathi Gachagua said ” violence and extrajudicial killings have no place in our society. Governments that thrive on violence are short-lived and lack legitimacy. Leaders who resort to brutality and suppression undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy.”

The opposition leaders were in Bungoma for their day-two and final tour of the western region, calling on the people to stand firm against what they described as dictatorial leadership.

No serious injuries were reported, but several vehicles in the convoy were damaged. Security officers quickly intervened to disperse the crowd.
