Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has announced that he will contest for the Bungoma County governor seat in the 2027 General Election, ending speculation that he would vie for Nairobi’s top job.
Speaking during Breakfast 47’s morning show on Radio 47, Wanyonyi revealed that his time as Westlands MP in Nairobi was coming to and end and he is eager to serve his home county, Bungoma, as the next governor after the lapse of incumbent Ken Lusaka’s two term tenure comes to an end in 2027.
“As Tim Wanyonyi, I am ready to go and serve the people of Bungoma. I have been holding consultations with some of the leaders back home, the ODM leader and many others,” said Wanyonyi.
The declaration marks a major shift in his political trajectory. Wanyonyi, who has served as Westlands MP since 2013, had previously been linked to a potential bid for the Nairobi governorship, with his name featuring prominently among candidates eyeing City Hall.
Wanyonyi also weighed in on the ongoing Saba Saba protests and the recent youth led protests that have left many dead and injured urging the government to prioritize dialogue over any other means.
“I’m appealing to our President, it is time for him to consider establishing a national dialogue that brings everyone together to speak as one country. We need to listen to what the people are saying, because if we fail to do that, it will create a very big problem for us.” he urged.
Wanyonyi also took a swipe at the incumbent Nairobi Governor Johnstone Sakaja, alleging that he has underelivered on his promises.
‘The governor has failed miserably and come 2027 Nairobi voters won’t elect him,” he said.
Wanyonyi’s announcement comes at a time when various leaders across the country are positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, with fresh alignments already emerging.
