Kirinyaga County Governor Ann Waiguru has strongly condemned the chaos and destruction of property that were witnessed during the Saba Saba protests especially in the Mount Kenya region.

In a statement she posted on her Social media accounts, Waiguru termed the events of Monday July 7, 2025 as a tragedy that needed introspection, saying ”Yesterday’s Sabasaba protests were mainly in Mt Kenya and its diaspora. What we witnessed was the massive destruction of businesses and property, including in my county, Kirinyaga.”

”Why would locals participate in, or silently watch, the destruction of their brothers’ and sisters’ livelihoods? Why are we destroying our own future, our dignity, and our economic backbone?” she wondered.

The second term governor said the events are , ‘sadly, self-sabotage’.

At the same time she condemned the cases of police brutality and abductions’ there is no place for police brutality. No place for abductions.” she stated. According to waiguru the constitution provides for is peaceful protest, asking Kenyans to follow the law.

She also asked the government to listen to the genuine concerns of the youth warning that chaos will never be the solution ” But let us not, as Mt Kenya, cut off our nose to spite our face in an attempt to send a message to the government, ” Waiguru said.

She emphasized that such events distracts from and delegitimizes the very real issues that Gen Z has raised, issues that deserve resolution. She said If this destruction continues, Kenyans will be the biggest losers socially, economically, and politically. ”We must not allow ourselves to become the scorn of the rest of the country. Let’s please reflect.” Waiguru said.
